Sonic Jacket

technical design - components

Gumstix computer is a small 'Linux' based machine that is controlling the whole system. It has an audio extension with number of inputs and outputs. This inputs and outputs concern connecting and controlling sensors that are triggering playing and recording of a sound.
It also has additional plug-ins for microphones and loudspeakers.
Gumstix is using 'Python' programming language and it is programmed to record audio files in 'flac' format. Length of recorded files is 1 min. It is programmed to play them randomly when touching sensor is triggered. It contains a memory card of 512 MB that can provide recording in length of two hours. It also has a 'bluetooth' chip attached to it so it can be controlled or reprogrammed over the computer. It is placed on the front side of the jacket.
Temperature sensor is triggering the recording of a sound. When the jacket is worn temperature sensor is activating the recording when body temperature is reached. The circuit is placed on the front side of the jacket but the actual sensor is under the right armpit. Touching sensor is triggering the playing of a sound. Jacket has interactive areas which when touched activate playing of previously recorded sounds. The circuit is placed on the front side of the jacket but the touching area is on the right and left shoulder. There can be more then two touching areas. Microphone pre-amplifier is used for adjusting the rage of the microphones. So before the jacket is worn one can adjust how close or far sounds one wants to collect. It is placed at the backside of the jacket.
Loudspeaker amplifier is used for adjusting the volume of a sound. It is placed at the backside of the jacket. Two microphones [AV - JEFE (AVL909S)] are placed at users right and left wrist. Sound is played through two loudspeakers ['Visaton' FRWS 5 (4 ½)] placed in front of the jacket beneath the collar.
